Pitney Bowes was founded as the Pitney Bowes Postage Meter Company on April 23, 1920 by Arthur Pitney, the inventor of a “double-locking” hand-cranked postage-stamping machine, and Walter Bowes, a maker of stamp-canceling machine, with the goal of producing a machine that would combine Pitney’s “double-locking” counter with Bowes’s system for wrapping postage payment, postmarking and cancellation. Today, the company is an American provider of global e-commerce solutions, shipping and mailing products, and customer information management solutions. Based in Stamford, Connecticut, the company has 16,000 employees worldwide.
